About Nighat Ahmed

Nighat is originally from Pakistan. In 1976, she earned a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the Punjab University, Pakistan. She moved to the USA in 1977 after getting married. Here in 1993, she continued her art studies at Montgomery College and then in 1998 received a  Masters degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Graphic Design and Communication from the American University. She also studied water color painting at Corcoran College of Arts and at Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo, Maryland.

Nighat gains inspiration from nature and loves to depict every day life, people and objects. For example, in her “Kentlands” series, Nighat portrays the unique scenes of this pedestrian friendly community in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In her “Flowers with Pattern” series, she combines scenes from nature with geometric patterns that are commonly reflected in range of artifacts such as rugs, fabrics, pottery and handicrafts. Although, she has experimented with a number of mediums including pastels, acrylics, colored pencils, charcoals and others, her favorites are oils and water color. She seeks to capture the beauty and charm of her subjects by first working on site and after that composing the composition in her studio.

She is a member of the Montgomery Art Association & Washington Watercolor Assocaiation. She is also a member of the Rockville Art League, where she is a Program Coordinator from 2017-2020 monthly speaker series. She has exhibited her work in number of places, such as Kentlands Mansion, Art Barn, The Framers Choice Gallery in Kentlands, Glenview Mansion Art Gallery, Brookside Gardens & more. Nighat has exhibited her works in number of juried shows as well as in Plein Air events. She has won number of awards, including in Oil and Watercolor painting. She won first prize in the Oil category for her portrait in the 2019 Spring Juried Show at the Rockville Art League.
